Dancehall Music
0:01:42
Dancehall music emerged in Jamaica in the 1980s. The dancehall genre (not to be confused with the Jamaican dancehall as a venue for music and dance) differs from reggae in that the non-vocal music consists primarily or entirely of digital "riddims" or rhythmic beats created by a producer in a studio, and the lyrics are spoken (although often in a more melodic style than U.S. rap). Dancehall descends from the Jamaican talkover deejays (1950s- ) and dub studio techniques (1960s- ) in reggae music. Dancehall is sometimes called ragga. Read more about dancehall music here.

Over time, Jamaicans transformed the rhythm & blues sound by giving it a local flavor, gradually altering it from triple to duple meter, emphasizing a slightly delayed "afterbeat" (beats two and four), and favoring bass sonorities.
