Jamaican Dancehall Music
0:03:22
Dancehall music emerged in Jamaica in the 1980s. The dancehall genre (not to be confused with the Jamaican dancehall as a venue for music and dance) differs from reggae in that the non-vocal music consists primarily or entirely of "riddims" or rhythmic beats, typically created by a producer in a studio, and the lyrics are spoken (although often in a more melodic style than U.S. rap). Barrington Levy uses live musicians to create non-digital dancehall riddims. Dancehall descends from the Jamaican talkover deejays (1950s- ) and dub studio techniques (1960s- ) in reggae music.
